Will Trees Grow Back From Stumps?

Maybe you’re mourning the loss of your cherished tree. Perhaps it needed to be felled because it became a safety hazard or it was ill. When these scenarios exist, it is typically best to cut down the tree.

It is not hard to assume that once a tree is cut down, that the stump will not regenerate to produce another tree. You could be curious to know what happens to tree roots when the tree is cut down. What about the stump?

Whether a tree will grow back from a stump is not a black-and-white answer. Some trees will grow back and some will not.

Trees Growing Back From Stumps

Root System

It may surprise you to know that a tree stump can indeed eventually grow back into a full tree.  That can only happen because the roots are still present. Without any roots, there is no growth.

One thing to consider is that the roots are no longer active. There might be enough nutrients still in the root structure to produce sprouts that emerge from the ground. Eventually, the tree trunk will slowly recover. The key for this to occur is how healthy the sprouts grow.

Take heart. If the sprouts thrive, they will grow into a tree.

Types of Trees that Will Grow Back from a Stump

The most common trees that will not grow back are pines, palms, oaks, maples, cedar, fir, cypress, and aspens. There are other trees that do not come to life again, but these are the main ones.

Trees that you can count on to grow back after being cut down include Cottonwoods, Russian Olives, Elms, Tree of heaven, Ficus trees, Willow trees, Poplar trees, and Tamarisks. As a general rule, fast-growing trees tend to come back to life and slow growing trees usually do not.
